About Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is renowned for its beautiful lake, natural landscapes, and strong and empowered community. A small community that once began as a fort town, was later officially incorporated in 1887. Miners from the area started to populate Coeur d'Alene when gold and silver deposits were found in nearby Silver Valley and once the Northern Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1883. But that came later in the history of this Northern Idaho town. The city was named after the Coeur d'Alene people, also known as Schitsu'umsh, a Native American tribe whose presence in our community plays a significant role in its history, culture, and natural preservation.

Lake Coeur d'Alene

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Lake Coeur d'Alene experienced some of its greatest pollution from toxic waste. Early days of mining activity in nearby Silver Valey were estimated to have deposited upwards of 83 million metric tons of heavy metal-rich sediments into the lakebed. Heavy sediments include toxins including arsenic, lead, zinc, and cadmium. This put our lake and environment at risk, and future generations at significant risk of considerable health problems. Arsenic, for example, can cause cardiovascular issues, reproductive harm, and neurological effects like damage to your nervous system. Lead can wreak havoc on the human body. Lead exposure can impair neurological development and impair function most especially in children. Lead can accumulate in the bones, and kidneys, cause birth defects, and even lead to anemia, which impairs the body's immune response. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe once stated "... The State of Idaho, meanwhile, looked the other way." regarding the pollution. Even now, swimmers in Lake Cd'A can be exposed to lead and arsenic by accidentally swallowing water, soil, or sand.

Since the 1990s, the amount of phosphorous entering the lake is increasing which promotes algae growth and lower oxygen near the bottom of the lake.

However, Lake Coeur d'Alene remains a desirable recreational destination in Northern Idaho. While you should still think twice before eating fish from the lake, continued efforts to improve lake health by grassroot organizations and federal funding have significantly aided in restoring the lake to a much healthier state. Lake Cd'A is widely enjoyed by locals and visitors from all around the world.

Tubbs Hill

According to a great piece by the Spokane Historical Society, Tony was a German-born land salesman, a hotel owner, and a justice of the peace. He was also a prominent figure of the late 1800s in Coeur d'Alene. In 1884, the land we now know as Tubbs Hill was purchased and peddled to unfamiliar settlers as a great spot to build a home; With hopes of selling the land and ultimately turning the hill into residential neighborhoods. While the history runs far deeper, Tubbs was not an easy place to build at the time, with limited tools available and major rock sentiment in the way.

Friends of Tubbs Hill, a non-profit action group officially known as the Tubbs Hill Foundation, was formed by concerned citizens unhappy with greedy, harmful decisions being made by local politicians at the time. According to their history, in 1962, the then-mayor of CdA broke the tie to approve rezoning Tubbs Hill to clear way for development. At the time, the ones proposing the development plan were also appointed as part of the mayor's administrative team. It was a conflict of interest, and that was clear. With thanks to the citizens of Coeur d'Alene, voters ousted the mayor and council in 1963.

Tubbs Hill, now known as a cherished nature preserve at the heart of Coeur d'Alene, was at a continued risk until it was ultimately conveyed into public ownership in 1974. The community needed to take action, so they did. Citizens raised enough money to match the contract price. A few homes managed to be built upon the hill but are now protected against further development. Instead of a slew of condominiums or homes few could afford, this approximate 120-acre property is instead home to scenic hiking trails overlooking Lake Coeur d'Alene and preserving beautiful wildlife and flowers. Locals and visitors alike can take in the natural scenery for generations to come with the help of continued preservation by community members maintaining trails, tree health, and litter.

We highly recommend visiting a local establishment to get your hands on a copy of "The Treasure Called Tubbs Hill" by Scott Reed. It's only $10 with all proceeds given to the Tubbs Hill Foundation. It can be found for sale at the Coeur d'Alene Library Bookstore, Well-Read Moose in Riverstone, and the Museum of North Idaho downtown, or from the City of Coeur d'Alene Parks Department.

Increasing Tourism

Ironman Coeur d'Alene was introduced to the area and has returned to town annually since 2003. Talented athletes worldwide continue to travel to town to participate in this scenic race that runs straight through Downtown Coeur d'Alene. The Coeur d'Alene Downtown Association was established as a non-profit in 1990 by The City of Coeur d'Alene and community business owners within the downtown district. Joint efforts brought big, annual community-driven events such as Car d'Lane, the summer Street Fair on Sherman Ave, and controversially, the 5th St. Farmers Market, originally hosted by the Kootenai County Farmers Market. They can still be found in nearby Riverstone and their other popular location in Hayden. The downtown association is also responsible for beautiful hanging flower baskets seen throughout downtown come summer - a definite characteristic of our downtown core. But maybe not as apparent as the Coeur d'Alene Resort's iconic stark red geranium.

Mudgie & Millie

Mudgie & Millie, a children's book illustrated by Charles Reasoner, and written by Susan Nipp, first published in 2008 was another huge hit that attracted attention to a small Northern Idaho town. As an elementary kid growing up in a Coeur d'Alene district school at this time, the book had made its way into local schools, bookstores, and gift shops, and grew quickly in popularity. Two friends, Mudgie, a moose, and his friend Millie, a mouse, roam the streets of downtown Coeur d'Alene and visit locations that remain a staple of the community to this day. In this illustrated children's book, Mudgie is looking for his friend Millie, unaware Millie was along for the adventure and with him the whole time. Multiple bronze statues sculpted after Mudgie & Millie were eventually donated, which turned the twos' paper-based adventures into a real-world adventure. The statues were placed throughout town for fans to follow the adventures in real life and throughout downtown Cd'A. The series continues to inspire fans of all ages to this day, and the two are even having exciting new adventures in new places like Hawaii, Australia, Africa, and more.
